Using the Dosage Calculator

Once set up on items, the dosage calculator allows you to quickly get the needed dose, right from the medical record.

πŸ“ Overview

The Dosage Calculator helps determine the appropriate medication dose for a patient based on their weight. The calculator pulls three key values from an inventory item's profile β€” Concentration, Dose Range, and Default Dose β€” and uses the patient's recorded weight to calculate the correct amount to administer.

βš™οΈ Configuring Dosage Calculator Fields in Inventory

Before using the calculator, the relevant fields must be configured on the inventory item.

Navigate to the item from the global search

Click Edit Item and fill out the Concentration, Dose Range and Default Dose fields. See below to learn how to fill these fields out correctly.

Concentration

Enter the item's concentration value. This should reflect the item's Base Quantity. For example, if the base quantity is set to 1 tablet and that tablet contains 200 mg, the concentration should be entered as 200 mg.

Dose Range

Set the minimum and maximum dose range based on the concentration. The first unit corresponds to the medication amount (e.g., mg), and the second unit corresponds to the patient's weight (e.g., lbs).

🧠 Example: For a 200 mg tablet with lbs selected as the weight unit, a dose range of 10–15 mg per lb means the animal should receive between 10 and 15 mg of this medication for every pound of body weight.

Default Dose

Enter the default dose to associate with this medication. This value falls within the dose range and represents the standard amount to be used.

🧠 Example: A default dose of 10 mg per lb means that for every 1 lb of body weight, 10 mg of this medication will be used by default.

πŸ’Š Using the Dosage Calculator

Once the inventory item is configured, the calculator can be accessed in two ways:

  • Click the calculator icon next to the applicable item in a bundle.

  • Click the calculator icon next to the Quantity field when adding a medical record.

Once opened, the dosage calculator will give you the Total Dosage and Total Volume based on how it was configured on that item. The weight field will display the patient's last recorded weight and can be edited if needed. The Dose field will pull in the low end of the Dose Range and can easily be changed by typing in the field.
